6 Reasons to Live in Columbia, SC

Categories: About McGuinn Hybrid Homes, Columbia, Downtown Columbia | Posted: February 11, 2019

McGuinn Hybrid Homes Reasons to Live in ColumbiaYou’re thinking about making a big change—moving to a new area. For those of you who have just endured one of the coldest winters in your life, you might be looking at a southern locale where the weather is so much milder. Not that we’re biased, but McGuinn Hybrid Homes can offer 6 reasons to live in Columbia, SC!

Reason #1: Go coastal or take to the hills

The Columbia area is almost the same distance from the beach as it is from the mountains. Head in one direction to bask on a beach along the Atlantic coast, or just stay local and get your water energy from one of the many lakes that are close to Columbia. Lake Murray, for example, spans 48,000 acres and 41 miles, and offers 620 miles of shoreline, and it’s just outside of Columbia. Dreher Shoals Dam lets you walk across Lake Murray. The 1.5 mile dam includes biking and walking paths, a beach, and a picnic area. The 213-foot-high dam is a popular place to get a stunning view.

McGuinn Hybrid Homes builds communities—like Harbour Watch—that offer lakeside living and all the recreation and relaxation that goes with it.

From your central location in Columbia, you can take a scenic drive to the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s one of those trips where the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination.

Reason #2: We have really great sports

Do you like to watch great basketball, football, or other sports from the stands instead of a TV? Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Many pro players have emerged from USC, including the NFL’s Stephon Gilmore and Alshon Jeffery (both Super Bowl winners), NBA Hall of Famer Alex English, World Series 2018 MVP Steve Pearce and Adam Everett, who played both for the Cleveland Indians and the gold-medal-winning 2000 USA baseball team. Watching the Gamecocks play at the Columbia Area is like getting a sneak preview of future all-stars!

Columbia is also home to the Lexington County Blowfish, a summer collegiate team playing in the Coastal Plain League. Their home is here at Lexington County Baseball Stadium and, like the USC Gamecocks, you can expect to see young talent that’s getting ready for big league careers. Oh, and the team is named after Hootie and the Blowfish, that also happens to be from South Carolina.

Over at Spirit Communications Park, you can catch Fireflies. Don’t bring a jar, because you’ll be watching the New York Mets’ Class-A affiliate play top-notch baseball.

Reason #3: There’s a lot of history here

For you history buffs, you’ll find no shortage of fascinating stories, landmarks, and museums in and around Columbia. The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia presents a wealth of knowledge that comes from more than 70,000 pieces of art, artifacts, fossils, and other treasures that paint the picture of South Carolina’s past. For an even bigger picture, the museum features a planetarium and observatory.

Reason #4: Fun is a Columbia tradition

A good time is just part of our culture here in Columbia, SC. How do you like to spend your free time? Naturally, as a city, Columbia and all of the surrounding areas will treat you to a limitless array of dining and shopping. Whether you want down-home, real Southern cooking or an epicurean experience, you’re never far from great food.

Columbia has more ways to entertain you. The Icehouse Amphitheater is a key part of the city’s revitalization that began in 2012. This outdoor theatre regularly fills its 900-seat capacity for live performances, movies, and more.

The EdVenture Children’s Museum is a family-friendly place that welcomes curious hands and minds to explore learning. Whenever a youngster complains about being bored, head straight for EdVenture.

Colonial Life Arena is a busy venue for everything from USC Gamecocks and other sports events to concerts. The upcoming events calendar features an eclectic mix of entertainment, like James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Pink. Then there’s WWE wrestling and Monster Jam. And the kids will love shows like Disney on Ice and Sesame Street Live.

The Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia gives the whole family a respectful view of our wildlife citizens. The zoo focuses on education and environmental conservation, with plenty of fun that includes getting up close and personal with giraffes and kangaroos, ziplining, and scaling a rock wall.

Reason #5: The great outdoors is really great

With the idyllic South Carolina climate, you’ll probably want to get out and enjoy the sun-drenched days. Columbia is filled with parks where you can hike, bike, wander, picnic, and play. Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park offers a glimpse of Columbia’s history, while also featuring trails, playgrounds, an amphitheater, picnic spots, and fishing. Saluda Shoals Park is a riverfront recreation area, and the splash park there is just the thing for a hot day.

Take a hike through the Harbison State Forest or Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve. Go canoeing or camping at Sesquicentennial State Park. Wander through the many gardens at Virginia Hylton Park.

You can also blend the outdoor experience with casual shopping at the Soda City Market. This weekly street market in Downtown Columbia takes place every Saturday, rain or shine. With about 150 vendors, this event blends the best of local purveyors of food, art, crafts, and much, much more.

Reason #6: A good life is affordable

You can live well in this Southern area without spending a fortune, Housing costs are below the national average. See for yourself. McGuinn Hybrid Homes has brand new, single-family homes starting from the mid-$100,000s and townhomes from $133,900. Look at our communities, floor plans, and move-in ready homes. As often as award nominees say, “It’s just an honor to be nominated,” there’s nothing like hearing your name called as the winner! We recently experienced that thrill at the Home Builders Association of South Carolina’s 2018 State Convention, when it was announced, “McGuinn Hybrid Homes receives the first-place Pinnacle Award for New Home Construction in the category of $1.5 Million to $1,999,999.”

Since 2003, the HBASC has been recognizing the exceptional craftsmanship of builders and remodelers throughout the state. At this 15th annual convention, the association presented the prestigious Pinnacle Awards to builders and remodelers. The categories included New Construction, Green Building, Remodel Projects, and Subdivision and Community, and Sales and Marketing. Within the New Construction category, projects were grouped according to the home’s cost, which ranged from less than $250,000 to more than $5 million.

The Pinnacle Awards were created to honor the professionals in the home building industry who have demonstrated the highest standards for craftsmanship, innovative problem-solving and customer satisfaction.

Wade McGuinn, CEO of McGuinn Hybrid Homes, said the company is proud of the awards it has earned over the years. As a Certified Master Builder, he remains committed to maintaining the high standards that were set when he started McGuinn Hybrid Homes 33 years ago.

“We’ve always looked at home building as a way of helping people accomplish the dream of homeownership,” he explains. “That means building quality homes that are affordable, and providing an enjoyable experience for our customers. When we say, ‘Easy as 1-2-3’, that’s a promise.”

The Pinnacle Awards were presented at the HBASC’s convention, held July 13-15, in Savannah, Georgia. The awardwinners will be highlighted in the upcoming SC Builder Journal and featured on the SC Department of Commerce and the SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism websites to emphasize the craftsmanship and quality of the Palmetto State’s residential builders.

Design Trends for Home Plumbing Fixtures

McGuinn Homes Plumbing Fixtures

Home fashions don’t begin and end with paint, wallpaper, and home decor fabric. Every year, manufacturers of everything from appliances and carpeting to cabinet hardware come up with new designs. Design trends for home plumbing fixtures are no different. Styles, colors, and features are updated every year. If you’re preparing to choose details for your new home, McGuinn Hybrid Homes has some design ideas to consider.

Plumbing picks in the kitchen

Your choices for plumbing features encompass many decisions in your kitchen and bathroom: sinks, faucets, shower head, and tub.

In the kitchen, homeowners are looking for deep sinks, most frequently in farmhouse and undermount styles. Although stainless steel remains a popular choice, manufacturers offer many others that enhance the look of your kitchen: composite granite, enamel-clad cast iron, copper, soapstone, fireclay, quartz, porcelain, and solid surface.

For the kitchen faucet, hands-free is a desirable choice, accompanied by the pull-down feature. The black matte finish has gained popularity, as it works with a variety of kitchen styles. Still, brushed nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze maintain their position as the top choices in finishes for kitchen plumbing fixtures.

A pot-filler faucet near the stove is a nice option for the busy cook. Save yourself the time of stepping over to the sink while you’re cooking with this convenient feature, which is mounted to the wall and is hinged to pull it back and forth.

Best in bathroom fixtures trends

The spa experience keeps getting better, thanks to so many advances in bathroom plumbing fixtures.

The rain shower head remains one of the most in-demand bathroom plumbing fixtures. These oversized fixtures—picture one as wide as 20 inches in diameter—can be mounted to the shower’s wall or ceiling and provide a gentle but generous flow. You can also add electronic controls to pre-set the water temperature, spray, flow, and even music, if you’ve incorporated that feature into your luxury shower as well.

Bathroom sinks have gone so far beyond basic that they can look more like artwork than plumbing. Wall-mounted sinks lit with LEDs, uniquely shaped basins, and vessel sinks made from wood, stone, glass, and metal add style and luxury to your bathroom.

The bathroom faucet—sink and tub—reflect the same shift toward matte black finishes, oil-rubbed bronze, and brushed nickel, with chrome-plated brass keeping a firm grip on its long-standing choice for this room. The single lever style sink faucet is preferred over two handles, and a water-sensing feature is a good option for conserving water without compromising water pressure.

The tub is no longer a luxury—and you have more choices in bathtub styles, shape, and features than ever before. The freestanding tub presents a beautiful focal point and comes in different shapes, like oval, rectangular, and round. Clawfoot bathtubs reflect the return of this vintage design, and are now available in a wide spectrum of colors. Jetted tubs provide the relaxing spa experience. Walk-in tubs are ideal for people with special needs. Corner tubs accommodate bathrooms with limited space.

Our design professionals are ready to guide you through every detail in your new home. McGuinn Homes builds energy-efficient, single-family homes and townhomes around Columbia, South Carolina. Get the “Jewel” of Lakeside Living at Crystal Cove

Categories: Buying a New Home, Columbia, SC | Posted: June 26, 2018

McGuinn-Crystal Cove
Lake Murray is known as “The Jewel of South Carolina”. This man-made lake in Columbia, South Carolina, spans 48,000 acres and provides 620 miles of shoreline. It all adds up to countless ways to enjoy the great outdoors. From the best bass fishing around to boating, swimming, water sports, beaches and fun on the shore, Lake Murray is the place to be. Why not do more than vacation here? You can get the “Jewel” of lakeside living at Crystal Cove, McGuinn Homes’ community of energy-efficient, new construction homes.

Crystal Cove is situated on the northeastern side of Lake Murray, in the small town of Irmo. Although just 12 miles from Downtown Columbia, Irmo is a friendly and serene lakeside community of stately homes, green spaces, and locally-owned businesses where you’re treated like a friend, not a customer.

A community of luxury homes

We chose a location within walking distance of Lake Murray Marina to develop our community of luxury homes. Our portfolio of single-family homes features floor plans that range from 2,320 to 3,547 square feet of indoor living space.

The Cleveland is a popular design that offers versatile space and so many ways to customize it to your liking. As the largest floor plan for Crystal Cove, it presents four bedrooms—with an option for a fifth—and 4.5 baths. The flex room near the front entry could be used as a home office, formal living room, playroom, library, or hobby studio. The second-story loft adds another flex space that expands the opportunity in this home.

The Cleveland offers a luxurious, first-floor owner’s suite, with bay windows filling the large bedroom with natural light. We incorporated an oversized master bath and a closet that could be a room on its own.

A wealth of energy-efficient features

With all the luxuries included in this home (and all of our Crystal Cove homes), one of the most valuable features is its energy-efficiency. McGuinn Homes takes pride in the commitment to our hybrid homes. Our design, construction methods, materials, and appliances reflect the most advanced eco-friendly options. We use high-quality insulation, 14 SEER air conditioning system, an engineered roof system, and thermal windows to keep you comfortable while also conserving energy. The tankless gas water heater we install in our hybrid homes uses less energy and provides a better source of hot water when you need it—and lasts longer than conventional water heaters.

You could be living lakeside this summer!

McGuinn Homes has several move-in ready homes for sale at Crystal Cove right now (including two Cleveland designs). You can even put your own finishing touches on some of them. Look at the opportunities at Crystal Cove and our other new home communities around Columbia, and talk to us

Advantages of the Townhouse Lifestyle

Categories: Columbia, Energy Efficient | Posted: May 22, 2018

perks of townhome living

Owning a home should provide more gratification and satisfaction than obligation. McGuinn Homes believes your home should fit you and your lifestyle perfectly. When it doesn’t, you need to think about making a change. For people who are thinking of downsizing from a single-family home or upsizing from a condo or rental, the advantages of the townhouse lifestyle are worth a look.

The spaciousness you’re used to.

A townhome provides two (or more) levels of living space. You still enjoy the comfort that comes with having a full-sized kitchen, living area and bedrooms, with spacious closets and spa-like bathrooms. You can choose a townhome with the bedrooms upstairs or a first-floor master suite, a great option for aging in place.

The privacy you want.

With a townhome, you have no upstairs neighbors—a distinct advantage for people who want more privacy than a condo can offer. McGuinn Homes designs and builds our townhomes to afford the solitude of living in a single-family home, including a fully fenced-in backyard.

The safety and security you need.

In a townhome community, you’ll get to know your neighbors. You’ll see them coming and going, meet up at the clubhouse or pool, or chat with them as you’re taking a walk around the neighborhood. This familiarity presents a sense of safety and security, knowing that others are keeping an eye on the community activity. When someone is ill or needs help, you can count on someone close by to pitch in. If you need to be gone for a period of time, it’s easy to find a friendly neighbor who can check in on your home, water the plants, and make sure nothing suspicious is left unnoticed.

Without the maintenance you don’t want.

Owning a home comes with chores like exterior maintenance—taking care of the lawn and landscape, cleaning out the gutters, repairing roof shingles, and painting the exterior. Wouldn’t it be nice to leave that responsibility to someone else? With a townhome, you own the land your home is on, but your exterior maintenance is included in your monthly HOA fee. You don’t need to spend your valuable time on these chores or maintain and store the mower and tools to handle it all.

And some really great ways to spend your free time.

Townhome communities are more than a collection of homes. You will likely have common areas that enhance the neighborhood, like a swimming pool, fitness center, and playground. Hampton Forest’s clubhouse also includes a poolside cabana, outdoor fireplace, and a 16-seat theater room with a surround-sound, wide-screen television.

At McGuinn Homes, we build homes for people at every stage of their life. Our energy-efficient townhomes at Hampton Forest in Columbia, South Carolina, are a popular choice for everyone from working professionals, first-time homeowners, and young families to empty nesters and active adults. We currently have new townhomes for sale at Hampton Forest, so contact McGuinn Homes to begin exploring the advantages of owning a townhome.

Spring Gardening Tips to Get Your Yard Ready

Categories: Columbia | Posted: March 28, 2018

Another winter is behind us. It’s time to get outside and enjoy this South Carolina spring weather. Spring is a great time to look at opportunities like McGuinn Homes’ communities and custom homes built on your lot throughout the Columbia, South Carolina area.

Spend a little time preparing for the gardening season. McGuinn Homes offers these spring gardening tips to get your yard ready!

Start with a Good Clean-Up

Even if you raked out your beds and dead-headed your plants, you still have some spring cleaning to do. Pick up any dead foliage, pine needles and cones, and debris that found its way onto your lawn, around your shrubs, and in your gardens. Pressure wash your outdoor living area, walkways, driveway, and other surfaces.

Provide Good Drainage

Never attempt to work with your soil when it’s very damp. Cultivating wet dirt will destroy the soil’s structure and lead to a hardened result when It does dry. If you are anxious about getting started, raise the garden beds to provide the necessary drainage.

Know Your Hardiness Zone

Depending on where you live in South Carolina, you could be in a hardiness zone 7a, 7b, 8a, or 8b. Your zone will determine which plants will thrive in your climate. Click here to make sure you know yours.

Ease Your Seedlings

If you’re planning to start plants from seed, don’t rush into transplanting the seedlings into your garden when they start to sprout. Gradually expose them to the sunny conditions for a few hours. Increase the exposure daily before planting them in the garden.

Clean Your Tools

Give all of your gardening tools a good scrub to make sure you don’t unknowingly transmit unwanted fungus, bugs, or other things that could have collected on your tools over the winter. Also, check your hose for leaks and repair or replace it.

Fertilize Your Lawn

The best time to fertilize your lawn is early spring and late fall. Also get a head-start on fending off crabgrass, weeds, and pests with a pre-emergent herbicide.

Amend Your Soil

After you’ve raked out your garden beds, add a fresh layer or nutrient-rich soil. Rake it to mix the new soil with the existing soil.

Prune Carefully

Many of your trees and shrubs are beginning to grow again after a dormant winter. Remove the dead branches that might encourage infestation. Prune back the limbs until you see a hint of green. That’s where the healthy growth will begin.

Plant Container Gardens and Hanging Baskets

Give your yard a splash of color by creating these portable gardens. Find interesting pots, baskets, and containers to add character. Fill them with spring-blooming annuals, like petunias, pansies, impatiens, dianthus, and alyssum. Brighten up your entry and add colorful container gardens and hanging baskets wherever you want, the perfect pick-me-up for spring.

Spring is also a great time to think about buying a new home. We also have energy-efficient new homes available right now. Talk to us when you’re ready to change your life and your home.
